An UPDATED Message from the 2009 IAD Conference Chairperson - Part 1

Dana Craig - 2009 IAD Conference Chairperson

Transcript:

Hello! I want to introduce myself. My name is Dana Craig. I'm the chairperson for the 2009 IAD Conference in Bloomington, Illinois. The name of the hotel is the Chateau on Thursday, June 11 - Saturday, June 13, 2009. This will be a wonderful conference filled with a variety of event such as Entertainment on all three evenings, Banquet, Miss Deaf Illinois Pageant, workshops, IAD General Meeting, Open Forums, Senior Citizens Breakfast, etc throughout the Conference.

I want to share with you the theme of our 2009 IAD Conference, "We The People!" Why? The 2009 IAD Conference Committee feels that the vision is that as a Deaf Community, we need YOU. Regardless of your background, age, or where you are from, We ALL need to come together to form a strong bond to work together to become strong again. If all of us within the Deaf Community do not work together, we eventually become weak and the Illinois Association of the Deaf would become weak. Our goal is to pull all of us to come together to the 2009 IAD Conference. This is an EXCITING TIME to see all of the new exciting opportunities and to come together to meet each other and to become a very STRONG Deaf Community again. We hope that you will attend to the Conference and really enjoy yourselves and to bond together again. Thank you!

Stipend Assistance for the 2009 IAD Conference

Many of us understand that the economy right now is bad. Job losses, people losing their homes, state monies freeze, and most recently, our past governor was thrown out of office: a real mess! I understand and the 2009 IAD Conference truly understands, too. The IAD Executive Board understands, too. The 2009 IAD Conference Committee has been looking for ways in which to help those who need assistance to be able to come to the 2009 IAD Conference. Guess what? We did find ONE way in which this will help! We found an application information called "Stipend Assistance". This assistance is for anyone with a disability who can fill out this form and apply to receive some financial assistance so that you can attend the 2009 IAD Conference. This will pay for registration fee, paying for meals (IF it is not included with the combo), may help pay for transportation. FYI: This assistance will NOT help pay for your hotel - That is a separate cost. But don't worry, we will be glad to work with you to help you find a roommate which can help split the cost of hotel room or to help you find another hotel that may be cheaper, etc. The Important thing is that there is assistance available! You can apply for this assistance. Nick, my co-chairperson, will explain in detail in his vlog. If you feel you would like to contact me or any of the 2009 IAD Committee, feel free to come to any of us for help! You can also go to your local Center for Independent Living for assistance in filling out your form. I would like to see many of the Deaf Community to come to the Conference. We will try to find ways to make it possible for you to attend, because, without you, the Deaf Community will not be strong.

Remember, our theme is "We, the People!"

June 11, 2009 - Thursday Evening Entertainment

When the presentation is finished, Elizabeth Gastelum, Deaf Lawyer, will come to discuss about "Power of Attorney (POA). Elizabeth will discuss about DNR and what it means. She will also discuss about Estate Planning and what to do. All of this will happen during the Senior Citizens Breakfast. This is an EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY you do not want to miss! On Saturday at Noon is the Legislative Luncheon. During or after lunch, we will have Tom Benizer on the History of IAD. For some of you who may have seen a previous presentation at the 2005 IAD Conference which was very inspiring! There were stories about the Deaf from many many years ago and the struggles that IAD overcame over the past century. The changes and how life improved better for the Deaf Community. Our lives today are BETTER because of the struggles the Deaf Community of the past have accomplished. It is important to continue to remember the history of IAD and Tom will be presenting this again for us! Deaf Community of the past didnt have all of the things we have today: Pagers, VPs, Technology, etc. Deaf Community of the past traveled far just to be together. This is part of the presentation to remind our Deaf Community of the History of IAD and the struggles we have overcome. It is the kind of presentation that is worth seeing many times! For those of you who haven't experienced this presentation will truly enjoy and appreciate it!

Ok, now many of you may have been affected by the downturn of the economy. Some people cannot afford for the 3-Day Conference, there is assistance that is called Stipend Assistance. It is a form that you fill out which you are asking for financial assistance to help pay to attend the 2009 IAD Conference. This is for individuals who TRULY CANNOT afford to attend, but want to attend.

(Example of the Stipend Assistance Form is shown)

After having seen this form, you fill out your name, address, contact information, etc. You can give this to any of the 2009 IAD Conference Committee. You can also go to your local Center for Independent Living for assistance in filling out the form.

Open to Public Information

Ok, now I will explain further. As you recall in the previous vlog, Dana Craig, our chairperson, explained some events that are paid such as the workshops, some foods, banquet, some entertainments, etc. Now, in this vlog, I will explain what is open to the public. One of the first things that is open to the public is an area called the "Open Lobby Area". When you first enter the Conference Doors, you will see rows of tables and booths in the open area. Each booth has different representatives to talk with you such as companies, government agencies, Deaf Services, etc. There will be qualified sign language interpreters available so that you can talk with invididuals who may not be Deaf. You can freely express your concerns on any issues you feel are important as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing Person. There will be a stage area in which short announcements are made, etc.

June 11, 2009 - Thursday Night Open Forum

Thursday evening, there will be an open forum to the public where you can come in see the issues discuss and participate by expressing your concerns and ideas. This is the PERFECT time to address many issues to IAD during this open forum. This will help IAD to set up goals for the next two years from 2009 to 2011 for the Deaf Community. Many times, the Deaf Community do not have an opportunity to speak out. This is YOUR time to do so.

June 12, 2009 - Legislative Forum

On Friday, we have a legislative forum open to the public to discuss a variety of legislation that involve the Deaf Community. Many legislations such as the Hearing Aid Insurance Act, Interpreter Licensure Act, Housing Laws, Fire Alarm legislation, etc. The State of Illinois addresses legislations every year and this is an EXCELLENT time for YOU to get involved!

June 13, 2009 - IAD General Meeting

On Saturday is an IMPORTANT DAY. On Saturday is the IAD General Meeting. This meeting is a state-wide meeting to conduct IAD Business and to address issues that affect the IAD Members. It is during this meeting that there will be an Election for IAD President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary. This meeting is an excellent opportunity for you to get to know who your new leaders for IAD for the next two years.

Together, we are strong... Together, We The People!"

Now, as I recentlly explained in the Vlog, there are many different events happening throughout the 2009 IAD Conference! Remember, the most important person in IAD is YOU! YOU are who can make the IAD strong! Together, we can accomplish many things! So please consider coming to the 2009 IAD Conference! This is a RARE opportunity to really make change and a different that has never happened before in the history of IAD. It is now time for ALL of us to think toward the FUTURE!
